Death of a great server. :-(

28 07 2009

RIP little Dell server running CentOS Linux 4: 8/18/1998 – 7/28/2009

Today a great server took in its final electrons. It had processed all the bits it could and it did so for much longer then its peers. This server has been around at this company far longer then I and it has been doing work since the first day. This little box was in charge of running various scripts and web checks for us so it ran at all hours of the day. It was best known for having a tremendous CPU load for extended periods and yet still breaking (and maintaining) new uptime records. First record: 293 days uptime. Then broke that record with 380 days uptime. It drew its final electrons breaking the record once again with an astounding 459 days!

# more /proc/cpuinfo | egrep '(name|MHz)'
model name : Pentium II (Deschutes)
cpu MHz : 398.317
# more /proc/meminfo | grep MemTotal
MemTotal: 191212 kB
# df -h | grep hd
/dev/hda1 8GB 3.1G 4.7G 40% /

They just don’t make ’em like they used to. I am going to miss the little server that could just crunch through anything with high load and crazy uptime.

RIP because you deserve a peaceful rest.
